Get Your Dad What He Wants for Father’s Day – Here’s How

Father’s Day is almost here.  What are you buying your dad for Father’s Day? Are you going out and buying him a tie? That seems to be the old fallback for a Father’s Day gift, just like flowers are for Mother’s Day. But what if your dad isn’t the sort who likes to wear ties? You are going to give him a gift that he’s never going to use and will probably pass on to someone else or else it will lay in a drawer.

So what are you to do? Here are some suggestions on how to pick the right gift for Dad.

  • Hobbies – The first thing that you want to do is to figure out what kind of hobbies he has. Does he like to grill? Does he like to fish or play golf? In other words, what does he like to do in his spare time?
  • Interests – The second thing that you want to do is to think about his interests.  Does he like a nice glass of brandy? Does he have a favorite sports team? There are lots of possibilities when it comes to sports.  What’s his favorite football or baseball team?
  • Needs – Finally, you want to think about his needs.  Does he need new aftershave? Does he want a new tie? Needs are the things that you should think about last because they don’t take a lot of imagination.   Besides, the things that he needs he often is going to buy for himself, so you want to buy him something that is fun.

Fathers often get things for Father’s Day that are unusable, ridiculous, or both. Remember the episode on The Cosby Show where this subject was covered? That was a bit over the top, but not by very much. Think about your father and what he’d like. Then use that to buy him a gift he can really use.
